3 T. oil
1 chopped onion
1 cup rinsed raw brown rice
2 ½ c. water
1 t. salt
½ t. basil
½ t. oregano
½ t. garlic powder
¼ t. pepper
½ t. turmeric (optional, gives yellow color)
Heat the oil in a heavy saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and rice; fry 10 minutes. Add the water and spices. Boil over high heat, cover and reduce to low. 40-45 minutes till liquid is absorbed. Then turn off the heat and let sit in place 10 minutes. 6 servings.
